ABOUT OUR PURPOSE REVEREND CANON THEODORE GIBSON (1915-1982) was one of the truly great persons to live and work in Dade County. His impact on the religious community, his battles for local and national civil rights, and his years of dignified service in governmental affairs are of memorable significance. It is altogether fitting that an organization dedicated to community understanding and to the betterment of the human condition bear his name. THE THEODORE GIBSON MEMORIAL FUND was instituted in 1983 and operates today out of its own modest building at 3634 Grand Avenue in the Grove. The Advisory Board and Officers and Trustees of the fund include some of the outstanding citizens of South Florida. Our leadership involves people of various races and ethnic backgrounds. The Fund's goal is "TO FOSTER A ONENESS AMONG GREATER MIAMI'S MULTI-ETHNIC COMMUNITY" as reflected in the Fund's charitable, educational, and cultural activities and in its concern for human rights. REVEREND CANON GIBSON'S career of broad range began when he became pastor of Christ Episcopal Church in Coconut Grove. From that locale he served the people of the Grove, in time, all the people of Dade County from 1945 through his passing in 1982. Our Memorial Fund hopes to do the same. We have bought land adjoining our offices and are ready now to build the THEODORE GIBSON CAMPUS, and inviting place which will serve younger childern in the day time and adults at night. |
